About. The Carolina Hurricanes were
formerly the Hartford Whalers and played out of Connecticut. Faced with
financial problems, the team owners moved the franchise to North Carolina
before the 1997-98 season and renamed the team the Hurricanes. In 2001-02,
the Hurricanes went all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals before losing to
the Detroit Red Wings. The team's name and logo are taken from the wind
storms that often strike North Carolina’s Atlantic seaboard in late fall
and winter. |
