About. Florida's Tampa Bay Lightning
joined the NHL 1992. They play their home games at the St. Pete Times
Forum. The team name comes from Tampa's reputation for frequent thunder
storms.
Stanley Cup Winners 2004
Tampa Bay clinched hockey's premier trophy - the Stanley Cup, for the first
time on 7 June with a 2-1 victory over the Calgary
Flames in deciding game seven of the series.
Ukranian Ruslan Fedotenko scored twice for the Lightning - the second with
five minutes left in the second period. The Flames fought back, Craig
Conroy firing a blast from long range with just over 10 minutes left. But
despite nine shots on goal, the visitors failed in their bid to be the
first Canadian winners since 1993.
Lightning captain Dave Andreychuk, whose 1,759 NHL games were the most for
anyone without an NHL championship win, succeeded in his quest to have his
name inscribed on the Stanley Cup. "It's awesome," he said. "It took me 29
years to get here, and I'm so proud of our guys because we got a game
seven at home because we worked hard all year long."
The
Flames, who made an improbable run to the final as a sixth seed, became
only the second club in 33 years to blow a 3-2 lead in the championship
series. |
