About.
In 1979 the Edmonton Oilers, from
Alberta Canada, joined the NHL introducing the league to a group of
players who would dominate hockey in the 1980s. Leading this team was the
player generally regarded as the finest in history: Wayne Gretzky, 'The
Great One'. In his nine seasons with the Oilers, Gretzky won seven
straight league scoring titles and was voted the league’s most valuable
player eight times. He led his team to four Stanley Cup championships in
five seasons, from 1984 to 1988.
The Olilers play their home games at
SkyReach Centre. However, on November 22, 2003, the Oilers hosted the
first outdoor hockey game in the NHL's history. The Edmonton Oilers were
defeated by the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in front of more than fifty-five
thousand fans at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.
